National Honor Society

Eligibility:
Candidates eligible for election to this chapter must be members of the sophomore, junior or senior class. Candidates eligible for election to the chapter shall have a minimum unweighted cumulative grade point average of 3.5, and have attended Cairo High School for at least three semesters. Each member will be required to pay a membership fee of $30.00 at the first chapter meeting in the fall (August 20, 7:45 am), regardless of class or membership status (i.e. sophomores, juniors, seniors, and officers). Dues and forms must be turned in by August 30, 2024. Spring Inductees will also pay a $25.00 membership fee by April 14.
A member who transfers from another school and brings a letter from the principal or chapter adviser indicating membership status in a National Honor Society will automatically be accepted in the Cairo High School NHS chapter. It is the student member’s obligation to notify the chapter adviser of his/her membership in a timely manner. If transferring over the summer, students should inform the new school at the time they register for new classes; if during the school year, it is recommended that notification be made within 30 days of enrollment. Transfer students have one semester to meet the requirements of the CHS Chapter, including by not limited to GPA, service hours, and chapter dues.
Application Process:
Election of new members shall be based on the Faculty Council review of a completed written application from a student who has returned the invitation letter signed by a parent or guardian. Applications will be available the end of January through the chapter advisor. Each application must be completed neatly and turned in to the chapter advisor by the advertised due date. The application asks to show evidence of how the student fulfills the high standards of NHS in the areas of Scholarship, Character, Service, and Leadership. In the application, the student and parent will also grant access to the NHS advisor for all discipline and grade records. The application also requires two letters of recommendation from teachers, administrators, community leaders, or employers who know the student well and can vouch for their character. Once the completed application is received from the student, the Faculty Council will review the application and student records to ensure that the prospective member meets the high standards of membership.
Officers:
There are six officers for the CHS Chapter of the National Honor Society. Officers are elected at the first NHS Chapter meeting each August.

Vice President for School Service
Vice President for Community Service

Service Requirements
Each member (including officers) must complete a minimum of 16 service hours throughout the school year. These are volunteer hours that are not required of the student for any other organization. Service hours should be completed before or after school and are not for monetary compensation. The NHS adviser will provide students with opportunities for service throughout the school year.
Service Records are due on April 28 to the Chapter Sponsor, and must have signatures for each hour served.
